Where have all the riot grrrls (like The Gits) gone?

On Monday night, my girlfriend and I went to the Delancey in New York for the premiere party of a documentary called The Gits. The Gits were an early 90s Seattle punk band, fronted by Mia Zapata, a bluesy, charismatic singer who was a beloved fixture on the local scene until she was raped and murdered one night in 1993. The doc follows the formation of the band and their subsequent rise in popularity -- they were on the brink of signing to a major label -- along with the excruciating circumstances of Zapata's death. The case went unsolved for over a decade until a suspect was convicted in 2004.

The Delancey show was both a vigil for Zapata and a celebration of the music she'd been such an integral part of. One of the highlights was Rrriot!, an all-women tribute band that tore through riot grrrl classics like Bikini Kill's Rebel Girl, L7's Shove, and Hole's Rock Star.� It was a terrific set and a fitting tribute to Zapata, but in the cab on the way home, we couldn't help but feel a little sad -- first, at the memory of a vital performer who died young, and second, because it'd been a long time since we'd seen a show with such anarchic, girl-powered rock.

The Gits Movie is the documentary about 90's Seattle Riot Grrrl band, THE GITS, whose promising start was cut short by the tragic rape and murder of their lead singer, Mia Zapata. Joan Jett and the surviving members of the band formed a new group (EVIL STIG) to fund the search for Mia's killer- who was found and brought to justice- 10 years later. The film features Joan Jett, The Gits, and members of 7 Year Bitch and Bikini Kill.

The film is having its NYC premiere at The Pioneer Theater (155 East 3rd Street at Avenue A in the Lower East Side) on Friday, July 4, 2008 and runs through July 10, 2008.

The premiere on July 4th will feature live music, giveaways and a Q&A will the film makers.

Here are some highlights:

I wanted to ask you about your myspace quote, "disgrace your stereotype."
How'd you come up with it and what's it mean?


That's a popular question, actually. Here's the backstory:
I have an extensive background in theater and musical theater.
Essentially, that was one of the main reasons that I decided to move to
NYC. Over the years, the theater world started to really grate on my
nerves: the cattle calls, the NYU's, the lack of originality, the lack of
roles for (what they like to call) "ethnically non-descript" AKA "racially
non-specific" females.

A few years ago, I got called in for a new off-Broadway "rock" musical.
My audition song was "Rock n Roll" by Led Zeppelin. The audition guys
thanked me and mentioned their appreciation for me choosing that tune.
(Too many bad renditions of Chrissy Aguilera songs will break anybody
down.)

There were 2 female lead roles in the show that I assumed that I would be
considered for: one was a rock n roll girl and the other- the
stereotypical black girl. When I got called back for the show- I was only
called back for the latter. Fine, whatever. I get the music: songs with
a r+b "gospel funk" feel. When I sang at the call back the panel asked me
to sing it again but really "black out." Ooh, my disgust...

When I left, I called a good friend of mine to bitch about the call back.
I said something to the effect of "I can't believe they wanted me to just
embrace my stereotype like that!?!" I contemplated that statement for a
minute and changed a few letters around to make what is now my personal
mantra. I feel like it's may job, as a multi-racial female rocker to
erase the labels and expectations that come from people liking to
categorize and limit me. Fuck that shit. I will not be put in that
quicksand.

Basically, I feel like it's my calling to be the freak, the outsider, the
a-typical, the ".1 percent" in any given situation.



When my family found out I liked metal, they all freaked out. How'd your
family react?

Essentially, my family consists of my Mother, my Father and me. My Dad is
White, my Mom is Black and Native American. Dad introduced me to rock:
Led Zeppelin, Janis, Jimi and Jim. When it started getting heavier, well,
let's just say my mother wasn't exactly thrilled. She grew up in the
south in the 50's n' 60's- at a time when racism was at the forefront and
very real on a daily basis. So, to her, the initial idea of her only
child being mesmerized by metal music was not tasty one. To her, that
music was for "rednecks" and it was a scene that she was positive would
never embrace me in return. She saw my attraction to it at any early age
and tried to get me out of it, but when typically when you tell a child
'no' to something, they want it even more. But also, it's not like anyone
can help what turns then on- when something is in your nature, you just
can't resist it.


What drew you to metal?

The intensity. And also the speed- when I was a kid I only liked fast
songs- I hadn't discovered the appeal of slow music yet. Also, on the
weekends, my Father and I used to watch WWF- and a lot of my favorite
wrestlers walked out to the ring with metal intro music. I guess that
also explains why I have a hard on for big dudes. (Heh...)


What bands do you listen to?

I love heavy/dark music by bands that have depth, texture, interesting
songs and take risks; My favorite band of all time is: Nine Inch Nails.
I'm also really into Alice In Chains, Metallica, Depeche Mode, Tool,
Deftones. PJ Harvey is one of my muses as well as Queen- Freddie Mercury
is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. AC/DC- preferably with Bon
Scott on lead vocals. Dio, of course, I really love him with Black
Sabbath. Rob Halford/Judas Priest: I'm really into Halford's solo stuff-
ie 'Crucible'- great shit! Pantera- The Great Southern Trendkill is one
of my favorite records, period. Grunge and Riot Grrl music: L7, 7 Year

rep for being sloppy or too noisy but I dig it, I love the raw energy of
'em. The Haunted, my boys- Kevorkian, Hatebreed, Rage Against the Machine.
New stuff that I'm into: Car Bomb, Cipher, Amon Amaroth, the new Celtic
Frost record 'To Mega Therion', Made Out of Babies.

Describe the sound on your latest album.

"BURN MY CROSSES" is a raw, in your face, angry rock record. It deals with
ideals, existentialism, dreams, aspirations, revenge fantasies, self harm,
the hunt for spirituality...

The sound is our best attempt to capture the unbridled energy of our live
show. It's tracked live and without any auto tuning- all of the rough moments are there.



What do you hope people will gain from listening to "Burn My Crosses"?

I hope that people gain a fresh perspective of the female voice in hard
rock/metal and a little inspiration to be truer to themselves regardless
of the common denominator.


Some other female vocalists in male dominated genres (Skin from Skunk
Anansie, DaBrat, Missy) have chosen to mask their sex appeal. Do you feel
yours has helped or worked against how your musical talent is received?

I always go back and forth with this. Generally I tend to mask my sex as
well. But when you rock double D's and an hourglass figure that borders on
cartoonish it can be hard to hide! I know a lot of female vocalists bank
on that shit. I almost feel like it would be so easy to do the same- the
'if you got it, flaunt it' thang. But I would rather gain the respect as
a legit artist than gain a reputation as a blow up doll. I've had people
at labels tell me otherwise, of course- saying that I should wear heels at
all times, especially on stage, blah blah blah... lemme tell you, if I
wore pumps on stage I think both ankles and my neck would be broken in a
matter of minutes.

Last night I met the metal god, ROB HALFORD, at the premiere of "Fight: War Of Words - The Film." It's a documentary about Halford's first solo band after JUDAS PRIEST, FIGHT, with behind-the-scenes footage of their original rehearsal and demo-recording sessions, interviews and ends with a full-length concert filmed at various venues and cities during FIGHT's first tour in 1993-94.

HALFORD is also going to be featured on TALKING METAL- yep, the same show that featured yours truly on Sept. 11th of this year. Since then, TALKING METAL has been picked by FUSE Music Television- yep, the same network that has featured yours truly. It's a small world after all...

Last night, MARK STRIGL from TALKING METAL was in the house. He interviewed me talking about HALFORD and JUDAS PRIEST and also let me shamelessly plug my band, SWEAR ON YOUR LIFE. ; )

All in all, it was a great night and I was beyond thrilled. AND, one of my all time favorite vocal idols, Mr. ROB HALFORD, is the proud new owner of the SWEAR ON YOUR LIFE record, "BURN MY CROSSES."

New to the modern hard rock scene, Swear On Your Life came from New York in 2005. Combining a Queen and Rage Against The Machine sound, the band reminds you of a group you'd see some fan of hard rock listening to on a normal basis meaning, this band fits right in with the mixes that you'd hear on your local rock station.
Combining some pretty brutal riffs with melodic singing, Swear On Your Life should really appeal to fans of bands like Chevelle or God Smack with their EP release "Burn My Crosses" it should really catch your eye if you're a hard rock lover.

Burn My Crosses starts out with the self-titled song and holds strong really well. Each track has something satisfying whether it's Militia's growls or melodic vocals.
Another great thing about this EP is the variation. Sometimes you see bands that have "every song sounds the same syndrome" well not here! Each track mixes up the mix if you get what I mean.
In the end, Burn My Crosses is a great pre-release. The band has a lot to offer to a large crowd because they're original. So, fans of modern hard rock add something new to your play list. I know I will and I'm a kind of guy that likes mainly hardcore and black metal bands but hey, got to have variety!

My Dear Tortured Souls,

So many of you have been inquiring as to the touring status of Van Helsing´s Curse for 2007, that I felt it necessary to post this letter.

Sadly, VHC will not be performing live this year. We have the opportunity to begin work on our second CD and feel we must take this time to start what will surely be a massive undertaking. Following up "Occulus Infernum" will not be an easy task.

I know many of you will be greatly disappointed that VHC will not be playing out this year but, if you´re not aware, "Occulus Infernum" has been reissued on the "Fangoria Musick" label with the original Alan Clark artwork and two new tracks: John Carpenter´s "Halloween" and "Cry Little Sister" from "The Lost Boys" soundtrack (with yours truly on lead vocals). It makes the perfect "pumpkin stuffer" this Halloween. You can find it at HERE!

From everyone involved in Van Helsing´s Curse, our sincere apologies for disappointing you this year...we´ll make it up to you in 2008.

Today I found out that a person that I had grown very close to very quickly has passed away: Herve Romain. He was an amazing person in every capacity and I loved spending time with him. Dare I say, in print, for the whole world to read: he was the only man that has ever truly understood me.

He died from "complications of a stoke" ...at age 36. The last time I actually talked with him was about 4 weeks before his death. He told me that he was 'really stressed out' -which was abnormal for him to admit to. Both of our schedules were getting pretty hectic and eventually we were reduced to text messaging... and I never imagined the worst case scenerio when I stopped getting responses...

My love and condolences to his family.

Herve, I will miss you so much.

So, My Space has officially taken over the world. It straight up wiped out all of the other sites of its kind, ie: Friendster, Everyone's Connected, Please Will U Be My Friend I'm Lonely, blah, blah, blah... (Just kidding about that last one; but not really.) At first I thought that it was a pretty lame concept, but now I believe it does have a point. There are so many cool people that I have met, so much music that I have listened to and many old friends that I had lost contact with that I now can easily reach again. So, thank you, My Space for being a new line of communication for the modern and the bored.

This Memorial Day weekend was insane.

I attended the Afro Punk Liberation Sessions at The Delancey in NYC- and LIBERATING IT WAS. The night started with a screening of the film: "Afro Punk- The Rock 'n' Roll Nigger Experience." I don't care what it takes but black, white, whatever, YOU NEED TO SEE THIS FILM. It features musicians and music lovers of color speaking very frankly about all aspects of being black in typically white dominated genres, ie. punk, hardcore, rock and metal. (The metal part was somewhat lacking, but that's okay, the filmmaker didn't know me then!)

Three bands rocked us crazy: Phillmore Brown, DFe and Game Rebellion. I CANNOT SING ENOUGH PRAISES ABOUT DFE. They're from France, they're heavy as hell and the speakers were smoking before their set was over...(not exaggerating...)

DFe will be back to NYC in July. Hopefully, next time they will come back and actually bring some merchandise to sell.

Don't get it twisted- this was not a black power "happening" or some black hippie bonding semiar. It was honest, it was real, it was powerful and it was fun.
