BIOgraphY.MilitiA. Rigid Catholic schooling and racial tension within her family caused this bi-racial bombshell to embrace the world of music. Her father, an avid vinyl collector and music lover, raised her on the sweet sounds of Led Zeppelin, Motown, The Beatles and more. Since age 7, MilitiA has been a classically trained pianist: receiving several awards, placement in state and regional competitions and given other various honors throughout her studies. By the age of 14 she was already an award-winning choral arranger, teacher and conductor. She performed in many plays and musicals, concert choir, concert band and would even put together talent shows and music events at her school. However, dark music and heavy metal were always the forbidden fruit- taunting M to possess the knowledge.
MilitiA joined up with her first bandmates while at conservatory in Boston.
The band, Disciples of Astaroth, was Bostons premiere Industrial Dance band. D.O.A. recorded and produced several albums and had an international release on the Cleopatra Records compilation, The Carnival Within: A Tribute to Dead Can Dance. This band enabled MilitiA to sing, write and perform dark and heavy music for the first time. Under the bestowed alias, Syrenne (pronounced Siren,) she embodied feminine sexuality and glamour. The band was successful, received some radio play, club play and had a very devoted following: a bizarre mix of college kids, drag queens, club rats, and other creatures of the night.
After a small tour, Disciples disbanded and MilitiA left Boston for the concrete jungle she had always dreamed of living in, New York City. After several months, M joined local shock-rock band, Vulgaras. In Vulgaras, MilitiA was finally able to sing, scream, write and flex her muscles with her newest acquired instrument, the bass guitar. Because of her environmental shift and musical awakening, the image of Syrenne was dropped and the newly bestowed alias, MilitiA was born. MilitiA gained much experience with the band, eventually going on to perform in various local events and concerts with bands such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Slunt and Lourdes. M recorded one album with the band, titled, Aphrodite P.O.W. (Independent.) After about a year and a half, MilitiA left Vulgaras to tour Europe with the musical Jesus Christ Superstar.
When M returned to NYC, she booked, produced and performed in shows at the Off-Broadway venue, The Belt- including Femme Fatale: An Ode to the Frontwoman, a Led Zeppelin tribute and the first production of Anarchists Of Colour: an all-black tribute to black rock. She continued to perform in many other shows to develop herself as an artist, including BITCH: A Ladies Tribute to Metal (Don Hills,) The Acoustic Estrogen Extravaganza (the C-Note,) Motherf*cker (Spirit,) Rock at the Park (The Park,) The Prom Party (Opaline,) the annual Valentines show Love Bites: An Evening of Power Ballads (Don Hills, The Delancey,) Classic Album Night (Arlenes Grocery,) The Madonnathon- the annual Madonna Birthday Tribute (BB Kings) and The Tribute to the Queens of Rock: Freddy Mercury and Elton John (BB Kings.) It was from the Queen show that MilitiA was spotted and cast as the lead singer in the Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) production of Van Helsings Curse, a heavy metal opera/concert.
To this day, MilitiA has been relentless in her lust for hard rock and her pursuit of musical excellence. M is currently working on her new band (more information to come!) She has appeared on Much Music/FUSE, VH1 and MTV2. She continues to perform locally, nationally and internationally doing studio work, producing shows (Militious Productions) and performing live with everyone from Theo (The Lunachicks) to comedienne Sandra Bernhard. MilitiA is a fierce live performer, giving everything from a whisper to a roar. MilitiAs fan base is ever-growing; they know that when she performs they are guaranteed an authentic and passionate experience.
Seductive. Intense. Scary. Refined.
MILITIA.
